Birding Adventure in North Sikkim

From 22nd January to 27th January, 2025, I embarked on a birding adventure in North Sikkim, exploring the region’s stunning landscapes and diverse birdlife.

Locations Visited

Lachen : Our base camp, where we began our birding journey.
Gurudongmar Lake : One of the world’s highest lakes, known for its breath-taking beauty.
Mangan : Returned to Mangan on the 26th via treacherous hilly roads and continued birding on the morning of the 27th January.

Bird Species Observed

During the trip, we observed a variety of bird species, including

Grandalas

Yellow-rumped Honey Guide

Solitary Snipe

Great Rose Finch

Snowfinches (Blanford, rufous necked)

Little Owl

Accommodation

Our accommodations were comfortable, with geysers and hot food providing a warm retreat after long days of birding.

High Altitude Challenges

Birding in the Tibetan Plateau was particularly difficult due to low oxygen saturation. To combat dehydration and shortness of breath, we drank plenty of water and walked slowly with short steps.

Weather Conditions

The weather was favourable throughout the trip, though extremely cold in the early mornings.

Road Conditions

The road conditions were challenging, especially in the last part of the Mangan to Lachen road and the early part of the Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake road. Navigating these treacherous roads added to the adventure.

Highlights

Witnessing the beauty of Gurudongmar Lake.
Observing a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitats.
Overcoming the challenges posed by high altitudes and treacherous roads.

Personal Reflections

The trip was a remarkable blend of thrilling birding experiences and challenging conditions. The beauty of North Sikkim, combined with the unique bird sightings, made it a truly unforgettable adventure.
