Assam has always held a cherished place in our hearts. From the carefree childhood days in Jorhat to the familiar rhythm of life in Guwahati, where fate led me once again, and the countless journeys to the oil fields—each moment is woven with nostalgia. The echoes of past agitations, the vibrant joy of Bihu, and the mesmerizing bloom of Assam’s flowers and wild landscapes have left an indelible mark on my soul. Time may have moved on, but Assam remains—like a long-lost love, forever special.Yet, as life unfolded, professional commitments took their own course, creating a gap of over three decades since my last visit.

The fisheries of our Greater Kolkata in the far South East of West Bengal form a very integral part of our ecosystem. It is a fragile, human-linked habitat providing a stop-over site for a variety of species in thousands of numbers every year at the time of return migration to their breeding territories in the North. The fisheries provide food to these species for fat-gaining during this temporary stop to allow them to have a healthy and long flight back to their lands.

Shelley begins by addressing the skylark directly, calling it a ‘blithe’ or carefree ‘Spirit’ rather than a bird, because the bird seems to have come ‘from Heaven’. Done with containments & lockdowns, the carefree spirit of the members of Birdwatcher’s Society (BWS) took to Bakkhali / Frasergunj on this Sunday, 30th August 2020.
