Habitat: tall grasses and reed-beds, lowland fields, wetlands by paddy fields, tamarisk thickets, grassy side of mangroves. Singly or in pairs. Forages low in vegetation, flicking its tail constantly. Food: mainly insects and their larvae; small spiders and butterflies. Song: distinctive; a cascading series of twitters following a buzzing introductory note.

Spotted Flycatcher is passage migrant which spend few weeks in Western India in monsoon during their pathway to wintering in Africa. It's bit strange to see this bird wintering in India, specially in the eastern part of the country. Probably this is the first record from West Bengal.

We found 8 birds were roosting amongst a large mixed flock of Curlew Sandpipers, Lesser/Greater Sand Plovers, Sanderlings and Dunlins. They were seen on the beach of Jambudwip (approx 8km south-west from Fraserganj coast in Bay of Bengal) during high tide.
